As the 3rd XI season entered it's final stretch, it was time for an inexperienced lineup to come against a Kirby side fighting for promotion.
After recent games, captain MacLeod needn't have bothered tossing the coin, in the knowledge that he hadn't won a toss for weeks. He lost. Kirby decided to bat.
After the encouraging signs last time out, it was left to the Braintree bowlers to show the league what they were made of, and despite some big hitting early on, Garner and Walker-Everton kept the openers at bay with some impressive line and length bowling.
The breakthrough came when the pressure told and Augustin went for a quick single, only for a Calley Foyster / Shubham Alhat combination to run him out at the striker's end. A couple of balls later and Garner bowled Xavier and Braintree were in the game.
When Foyster came on first change, with a tactical change that can only be described as genius, she immediately removed the dangerous Navadas and this is where the carnage really began.
With event bowling of the highest order, that made Shane Warne look like a part-time village cricketer, Foyster tore through the Kirby line-up with ease.
With good back-up at the other end with a wicket a piece for Moore and Walker-Everton, Foyster ended the Kirby innings quickly with excellent figures of 6 for 31. Certainly the best spell of spin bowling since Jim Laker's 19 wickets for England in 1956 and she had almost single-handedly put Braintree in position for a shock result as Kirby ended 134 all out.
After the magnificent tea that was put on by the supporters and players, it was time for Braintree to see if they could knock off the runs knowing they had time to do so.
With a makeshift opening partnership of MacLeod and Merrell, they started steadily, reaching 24 without any alarms.
However, once MacLeod had given Sada some catching practice and was dismissed for 10, and Foyster gave a thin edge to the same bowler for 4, things became more difficult.
Merrell displayed some big hitting but soon became Sada's third victim and the runs began to dry up.
With some scarily accurate bowling and an inexperienced batting line-up, the target started to look further and further away.
Garner and Marriott fought valiantly to keep Braintree in the game but to no avail and once both were dismissed, Lyra MacLeod showed her dad how not to be out at the end of the innings.
Having fought hard, Braintree ended on 75 falling well short of their target.
However, they showed that for two weeks in a row they are moving in the right direction, bowling out the opposition before batting out their allotted overs.
With two games to go in this first season, they will look to end it on a high.
