Andrew Sherry was the pick of the Braintree bowlers with 2-32 but the lower order hitting of Angus Lockhart thwarted the home side

Braintree's 2’s welcomed West Mersea to St Peter’s Road on glorious looking day hoping to build on the previous weeks convincing victory at Mildenhall. Skipper Andrew Gowers won the toss and elected to bat looking to set an imposing total. Dave Hale and Matt Kent set about their task immediately with Hale scoring a boundary of his 2nd ball. With the pair looking well set before Hale was removed by a fine catch by Rutter for 22, his first of 3 catches. Braintree's batsmen continued to add to the total, but wickets fell regularly Kent (35) and Jamie Foyster (29) departed just as they started to get going.
Rory Ciccarelli-Ainsley was the only Braintree batsmen to pass 50, eventually being dismissed for a fine 75 of 62 balls as Braintree stuttered to 235-9 in their 45 overs.
The bowlers set about their task of taking wickets and keeping the run rate down with the opening pair of Sherry's Andrew and Theo testing the outside edges of the openers bats and making it very hard to score. Sherry Snr was the first to strike enticing Wyatt to miss a straight one and leaving the umpire with little choice but to raise the finger. He then removed Rutter for 13 with Kent taking the first of his 3 catches, at midwicket, to get Braintree right into the game. A fine spell of 2-32 of his 9 overs gave Braintree an excellent platform. Joel Ainsley got in on the action with a wicket as Kent took another catch at midwicket to remove Mason for 10, before a tumble whilst attempting a catch of his own bowling leaving him hobbling around with a knee problem. Dave Hale replaced Sherry and a fine spell of bowling was finally rewarded with a wicket when Gowers took a fine diving catch, gathering the ball in his mid-rift as he landed. Skipper Gowers got himself into the action with the ball as hu took the wicket of Butler thanks to a poor shot and a great catch by Kent.
Calley Foyster was introduced to the attack and with her first delivery bewildered Mersea batsmen Conway so much he two footed his own stumps in a bizarre moment that saw him injure himself whilst demolishing is own stumps. A dismissal rarely seen but one that has feature in both of the last 2 games.
Braintree were looking in control and trying to close the game out but West Mersea’s Angus Lockhart and Joe Wyatt had other ideas about the end result and added 65 runs in a fine partnership to reduce Mersea’s to needed 30 runs off the final 6 overs. Lockhart finally falling for an invaluable 59 bowled by Sherry Jnr in his 2nd spell and he added another soon after with some fine quick accurate bowling.
But Wyatt ultimately steered Mersea to fine win with some calm controlled batting at the end.
A great game, a frustrating result but still some valuable points collected in what will hopefully be another successful season for the 2’s.
