Braintree's U11s enjoyed a fine win over local rivals Witham on Tuesday thanks to an excellent all round display.

With Witham having chosen to bat first it was Braintree duo Josh and Lewis Kay (helping Witham make up the numbers) that took to the crease first to face Will Sherry and Joe Chaplin and they pretty much cancelled each other out with some dogged batting and tight bowling. Josh did manage to get Sherry away to the boundary for one well struck 4 and they took the score to 213 at the end of their 4 overs, crucially, not losing a wicket.

George Martin and Lucas Hale were the next pair of bowlers for Braintree and they managed to reduce that total to 209 with 3 wickets in their 4 overs. Martin conceded just 7 runs from his 2 overs with some accurate bowling whilst Hale returned figures of 2-4 having clean bowled 2 Witham batsmen in his second over to add to a run out in his first.

Just 8 more runs were to follow from the pairing of Zach Peacock and Jo Chaplin as the accuracy of the Braintree bowlers began to tell.

George Wedge and Luke Huckson had a slightly tougher task as Witham's best batsman, Thomas Kemp, came out in the final pairing and struck 4 boundaries on his way to 20 but 2 wickets from the final 3 balls of the last over, bowled by Huckson, saw Witham close on on 236.

Will Sherry and Joe Chaplin opened up for Braintree and got off to a flying start with both striking lovely shots for 4 in the first 2 overs. Sherry finished on 11 and Chaplin 6 as, aided with a few extras, they put on 32 in the first 4 overs and got the Dolphins into a great position.

Zach Peacock and George Martin took to the crease for the next overs and, although lost a couple of wickets, demonstrated some excellent running to score 6 and 3 respectively, putting pressure on the fielders at every opportunity.

At the halfway stage Braintree had 224 on the board and knew that preserving wickets was the key to getting over the line. That's exactly what they did as they didn't lose a single wicket in the last 8 overs. Luke Huckson and Jake Lee took the score to 251 and gave the team some breathing space with Lee scoring 9 and Huckson 5 before the final pairing of Lucas Hale and George Wedge saw out the game excellently. Wedge playing a very mature innings as he made sure he wasn't going to get out while Hale was a little more aggressive striking 2 fours in his 9.

A fantastic win for the young guns that will give them lots of confidence as they travel to West Bergholt on Sunday morning
